Kraftwerk - Autobahn (1LP BLUE booklet)

Kraftwerk – Autobahn is one of the landmark albums in electronic music, the record that introduced Kraftwerk's extraordinary sound to an international audience and helped lay the foundations for countless genres that followed. Released in 1974, it transformed synthesizers and electronic experimentation into music that could be futuristic, melodic and surprisingly accessible.

The centrepiece is the remarkable title track, "Autobahn", an epic journey inspired by travelling on Germany's motorway system. Synthesizers, electronic rhythms, treated vocals and traditional instruments combine to evoke the sensation of a long drive, from the repetitive movement of the road to the sound of passing traffic. Its edited version became an unlikely international hit and brought Kraftwerk widespread recognition.

The second half moves into more atmospheric territory with "Kometenmelodie 1" and "Kometenmelodie 2", followed by "Mitternacht" and "Morgenspaziergang". Together they reveal a more reflective side to the album, moving from dark electronic textures into the wonderfully pastoral closing moments of a morning walk.

Autobahn was a genuine turning point, both for Kraftwerk and for electronic music itself. Its influence can be heard throughout synth-pop, hip-hop, techno, ambient and modern electronic music, yet the album still feels strangely timeless rather than simply historical. Minimal, playful, hypnotic and years ahead of its time, Autobahn remains an essential record from one of the most influential groups of the modern era.
