Led Zeppelin - III
Led Zeppelin – III is the third studio album from Led Zeppelin and marked a significant expansion of the band's sound beyond the powerful blues rock of their first two records. Released in 1970, the album combines hard rock with acoustic folk, blues and traditional influences, revealing a more varied and adventurous side to the band.
Opening with the explosive "Immigrant Song", the album moves through tracks including "Celebration Day", "Since I've Been Loving You", "Gallows Pole" and "That's the Way". Much of the material was developed while Jimmy Page and Robert Plant spent time at a remote cottage in Wales, helping inspire the more acoustic and pastoral character found throughout the record.
The contrast between heavy electric performances and delicate acoustic arrangements demonstrated that Led Zeppelin were capable of far more than the hard rock sound that had already made them hugely successful. Jimmy Page's inventive guitar work is complemented by Robert Plant's vocals and the exceptional rhythm section of John Paul Jones and John Bonham.
Initially surprising some listeners with its change of direction, Led Zeppelin III has become recognised as a pivotal album in the band's catalogue. Its combination of power, subtlety and musical experimentation helped lay the foundations for the increasingly ambitious records that would follow.
